Speed Bumps
“And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you.”
–1 Peter 5:10
Peter was writing this letter to a group of believers who were in the northern part of Asia Minor (what would now be Turkey). He’s writing to encourage them as they are facing fierce persecution in the Roman Empire. Peter concludes his letter reminding them that their suffering is only temporary – what they are going through will only make them stronger. While it’s not easy to endure trials, it’s important to stand strong and remain steadfast. Troubles are all but a speed bump.
Speed bumps…
You’ve probably seen warning signs about speed bumps. It’s an urgent call for a person to slow down. If you don’t slow down, you will often be jolted in your car and could even damage your vehicle. But, if you slow down and take the speed bump in stride it can be much less painful.
We often have speed bumps in life. They are things that appear to slow us down. They can painful, frustrating and debilitating.
How we take those speed bumps can impact us as well.
Think of Joseph. He had so many speed bumps including being thrown in a pit by his brothers and sold into slavery.
Think of Job. He lost everything. He lost his children, his wealth, his health and the support of his wife.
Think of Paul. After drastically changing his life and now fervently living for Jesus to spread the Gospel, he’s persecuted and thrown into prison.
When you find yourself in the midst of those “speed bumps” and incredible challenges in life, sometimes, the tendency might be to turn your back on God, get angry, and think that He’s forgotten you. But, that’s not the case. God is with you. God does care and this is the time when you should cling closer to God.
Joseph, Job and Paul all have something in common when they found themselves in the midst of trials and those “speed bumps.” They continued to trust God and praise Him.
What will you do during those speed bumps?
Remember Peter’s words. It’s only temporary. Even though it’s not easy, God continues to mold and strengthen you. Remember He is with you every step of the way.
Prayer: Father, You are mighty and strong. Thank You for all of Your grace and kindness towards us. You know what each person is going through. Strengthen each person today and firmly establish their steps. Bless and encourage each person who reads this. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
We hope and pray this encourages you today!
