What’s Your Goliath?

What’s Your Goliath?

“All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, “Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.’”

–1 Samuel 17:46-47

Is there something you fear? Maybe you are facing a huge problem as big as Goliath!

David was young when he went to face the Philistine giant – a giant that measured over nine feet tall. Goliath came wearing full armor, and each day for forty days, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. David, a young teenager at the time, a shepherd

Boy, volunteered to fight the giant.

“Come here,” Goliath said, “And I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!” (1 Samuel 17:44)

This was where David drew the line in the sand. It was his moment of truth. Goliath was enraged and if God was not who David said he was, David was as good as dead.

But listen again to see how David responds.

“You come to me with a sword and with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head.” (1 Samuel 17:46)

As you can imagine, people laughed and sneered at David. They probably thought he was crazy.  How could this young boy fight such a HUGE giant? It seemed impossible.

Yet, David knew that the battle was the Lord’s – that victory would display HIS power. This was not about David, but God.

David knew he was anointed by God. He knew God was with Him. He trusted and believed with everything He had that God would go before Him.

We know what happened next. With a mere sling and stones, David took out the giant. VICTORY. Can you imagine how shocked everyone was?

Why did he succeed?  Because he trusted in God.  David kept his eyes on God and not his problem. He didn’t complain or talk about how big

Goliath was. He didn’t talk about how he was scared or what he may not have to fight Goliath. He talked about how BIG God is.

Do you need to take courageous action today, in the midst of fearful circumstances?

Do you trust that God will fight for you and with you?

If you are facing a giant problem or impossible situation – stop for a moment and refocus.

Change your thinking.

Whatever giant you are facing today – just like David, know you don’t go into battle alone.

God is with you.

People may laugh at you, sneer, and make fun of you. They may second-guess you, but just like David – God will fight your battles for you.

God is bigger than any problem or situation you face right now.

God will give you the ultimate victory.

Think about this. If a strong warrior fought Goliath and won, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. People would cheer and all would have been forgotten.

But the fact that a young boy was able to take Goliath out shows God’s amazing power. God gets the glory.

Prayer:

Father, we lift up this day to You and thank You that You are all powerful, that You are bigger and stronger than anything we might face.

Help us to live, as David lived, courageously, boldly for You. Help us to stand strong against any problem or battle we may face. Lord it says in Your Word in Psalm 46, be still and know that I am God.

We pray You would be glorified today in everything we do and say. We pray that You would strengthen us, prepare us, guide us for anything we may face. Help us, Lord, in this deeply fallen world to reflect You. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Please know we are praying for you. No matter what giant you face, know God is with you.
