What is Your Foundation?
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
–Matthew 7:24-27
These words from Jesus came at the end of His Sermon on the Mount. He shared a parable, a story, drawing a dividing line between Himself and any other foundation for life. The visual of a home is powerful. Our home is where we seek shelter and security.
Walk around your neighborhood, and you might see different kinds of houses. You might see little ones, big ones, and maybe some under construction. Some houses are made out of brick. Others are made of hardy-board siding. Any builder will tell you the foundation is key. If it’s not right, there will be problems. And some houses may look nice on the outside, but if they don’t have the proper foundation, they’ll crumble.
There must be a firm foundation for a house to withstand any kind of storm. When my husband and I lived in Florida, we often faced intense hurricanes. Those homes that were not on a firm foundation, would be destroyed.
Jesus shares the way to a firm foundation of faith, is to listen to His words and do them. Many might hear the words of Jesus, but if we don’t let them sink deeply into our hearts, nothing will change.
When we have the right foundation, it makes you stronger and better equipped in life, especially in dealing with challenges. Life is not always easy, but if you have a firm foundation in FAITH – a relationship with Jesus – you are so much stronger to handle and conquer anything that comes your way.
Prayer: Father, I pray that everyone who hears Your Words will be like a wise person and build his or her house on the rock – that there will be a firm foundation of faith that can withstand any storm. Thank You for being with us, for never leaving, nor forsaking us. Thank You for guiding us. Thank You for loving us. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
We hope and pray this encourages you today.
