“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” —Ephesians 6:12, NKJV
When we think of the word “enemy,” most of us picture another person. It may be someone we’ve disagreed with or someone who has hurt us. But the Bible reminds us that our true enemy is unseen. As Billy Graham explained, the greatest enemies of the soul are not always other people—they are the world, the flesh, and the devil.
The devil doesn’t need new strategies because the old ones still work so well: pride, lust, greed, selfishness, and countless other temptations. The enemy knows exactly where we are weakest, and he targets the weak spots in our hearts.
Billy Graham once compared our spiritual defenses to the Great Wall of China. While the wall was strong and impenetrable, it failed in the end because of a weakhearted gatekeeper that accepted a bribe to leave his gate unlocked. In the same way, our spiritual lives can look strong from the outside, but a single unguarded area can leave us vulnerable to the schemes of the enemy.
“A chain is only as strong as its weakest link,” the saying goes, and so it is with our character.
The good news is that we don’t have to face these enemies alone. When we surrender ourselves to Christ and walk daily with Him, we stand firm against the enemy’s schemes. The devil holds no true power over those who belong to Jesus and abide in His Word.
At The Cove, we invite you to take time to examine your own ‘walls’ and strengthen your heart against any attacks. Check out our events to see dates available when you can book a Personal Spiritual Retreat at The Cove: https://thecove.org/events.
