We live in a busy world.
So often—even when we first wake up—we are bombarded with messages, news alerts, emails, and the list goes on.
We’ve become so accustomed to this fast-paced lifestyle that we’ve forgotten how to be still. The silence is filled with podcasts, phone calls, audiobooks, the news, and anything available to avoid the discomfort of being alone with our thoughts. We try to quiet our minds by filling the void.
But does the busyness of life really fulfill us and grow us deeper in our relationship with the Lord?
It can be overwhelming to pause and allow ourselves to sit in silence. Yet, the Lord often speaks most clearly when we are free from distractions and withdraw from our surroundings to focus on Him and His Word.
During His ministry, even Jesus would take time to be alone in solitude with the Father.
Some examples of this are found in the Gospels:
- “But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” (Luke 5:16)
- “And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.” (Matthew 14:23)
- “Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.” (John 6:15)
- “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.” (Mark 1:35)
This spring, consider taking some time to spend in solitude with the Lord. Allow yourself to sit in the silence and let the Word of God refresh and nourish your soul.
