Welcome to Kendra Graham’s online Bible study. This is a place where we can come together and share in our journey towards Scriptural truths and spiritual maturity. We pray this will be a safe, respectful, resourceful place to come and discuss God’s Word…to discover What it says…What it means…and What it means to you!
Kendra Graham NOTES from Exodus 17: 1-7
WHAT DOES IT SAY? THE FACTS ONLY PLEASE
In this step you need to list the outstanding facts of the passage. DON’T get caught up in the details, just list the facts. Do not paraphrase. Use the actual words of the passage. This is God’s Word, a lot of times this step seems tedious to some, but I urge you, as we read, and say and write God’s Word, it begins to sink deep into our hearts. If you just pick one fact out of the verse, write it down and meditate on it.
Vs.8. Amalek came and fought
Vs. 9. Moses: “Choose men to fight, I will be on the hill with the staff of God in hand”
Vs.10. Joshua did as Moses told him
Vs 11. When Moses held his hand up, Israel prevailed, when he let his hand down Amalek prevailed.
Vs. 12. Moses’ hands were heavy, Aaron & Hur supported his hands. Thus they were steady
Vs.13. Joshua overwhelmed Amalek
Vs. 14. The LORD said, “Write this and recite it to Joshua”
Vs. 15. Moses built an altar and named it “The LORD is my Banner”
WHAT DOES IT MEAN? THE LESSONS
Look for a lesson to learn from each fact. What are the people doing that they should be doing? What are the people doing that they shouldn’t be doing?
Is there a command to follow? A promise to claim? A warning to heed? An example to follow?
Vs. 8. Just when things seem to be on the brink, opposition arrives….awesome…
Vs. 9. We can’t run from opposition, we must stand and face it. Courage is needed. STAND! Knees knocking, heart beating and hands shaking. Often we don’t have the strength to fight, but God asks us to have the faith to stand. Remember WE ARE NOT ALONE! It is in these moments of absolute DEPENDANCE that God comes through with His plan for DELIVERANCE… we need these moments b/c it is in moments like this that we see our need for a Savior.
Vs.10. Obedience in the face of fear and dread is essential.
Vs 11. As servants of the most high, we are in need of ENDURANCE. When Moses’ hands were lifted with the staff of God, Israel remembered who they served, and who the battle belonged to. We must keep our eyes in God’s Word constantly, because when we take our eyes off, that is when we falter. Remember Peter walking on the water? So long as he kept his eyes where they needed to be, victory was his for the claiming, but when he took his eyes off his Savior, failure was imminent.
Vs.12. God gives us the support of godly friends, the support may not be in the way we wish because often times we wish we could walk away, or run away… true friends here, lifted Moses up to finish the task to which he was called, which in turn gave others, like Joshua and the warriors the encouragement to finish what they were called to. Hang on. Don’t give up. We are in need of endurance in such times like these that try men’s souls, others may draw from your endurance!!
Vs.13. I love the words of Jesus in this verse, “These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but TAKE COURAGE, I have overcome the world!” John 16:33. Because of Jesus we can overcome, but it will take obedience, courage and endurance. God gives us the end before the beginning, if we will just believe Him then obey.
Vs.14. Write down how God has been faithful, provider, defender, and banner to you in your life and then recite it to yourself, your kids, your family and friends often. Remember what God has done, and hold on to what He is doing.
Vs.15. Give God the glory, honor and praise…. we were created to serve God and give Him our praise…. moments like this are when we will be content, complete, knowing we are doing that which we were created to do. Teach our song to rise to You!
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME? NOW APPLY IT…. TODAY.
Take the lessons you learned and put them into the form of a personal question that you would ask your spouse, or a friend or your son or daughter.
As you write the questions, listen for God to communicate to you through His Word.
*Do not rush. Do not write things down just to have something on paper, this step takes more time that you may think. This is where Scripture meditation becomes real, this is where you begin to hear that still small voice speak to you, and place His finger in your life and begin to direct your paths…. this day, and the next, and the next. Do you trust Him enough to put into place that which He is moving you to?
Vs. 8. When have I felt overwhelmed by life only to then be faced with opposition that I was not counting on? Am I exhausted and the battle has yet to begin?
Vs. 9. How have I been called to stand? In my marriage? In the workplace? In my church? With my family? Friends? When have I stood with courage, and when did I shrink back in fear? Will I hold on and press in? In my dependance, how am I in need of a Savior? Will I pour out that need to God, who gave everything to save me?
Vs.10. How am I weighing the cost of obedience today? Why must obedience be such a challenge all the time?
Vs.11. Where are my eyes drawn to? Is God’s Word my last resort or first? Where is godly endurance needed in my life?
Vs.12. When and who has God placed in my life for such a time as this to encourage me to hang on?
Vs.13. When has God come through for me? (It may not be in the way I prayed for, or hoped for) Have I missed the ways God has been faithful to me to overcome in my life? Will I pray and seek out the times God has not dropped the ball, but carried me through difficulty for my good and His glory?
Vs.14.Have I forgotten how God has provided for me? Have I ever thought to seek out how God has been faithful to me? Will I take a moment and write down evidences of My God in my life?
Vs.15. Will I testify to God’s work in my life? Do I give God the glory, or do I keep a tithe of glory for myself? Will I determine to give God the glory He deserves daily?
LIVE IT OUT.
Lord, help us to live each day focused on Your Word, from morning to night. Without You, we fall apart. Guide our hearts with Your Word. Oh how we need you! Give us the endurance to overcome to victory and see to an end those things You have called us to do. Thank you for these moments of dependence, because in these moments is where our need and your strength become evident.
